Tundra Swan

Thank you for visiting my website. After several years of sharing photos through various free photo sharing sites, I have decided to take control of my photos and present them in a way I have a bit more control over the presentation and use. So you are looking at my attempt to share and maybe even sell a few of the photos I have taken over the years.

Information about Brian Schmidt

I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. Growing up, I had a strong interest in the natural world, and this interest has only grown throughout my life. After high school, I ventered out to the Pacific Northwest to attend the University of Puget Sound (UPS) in Tacoma, WA. While pursuing a double major in mathematics and biology, I took work study position in the Slater Museum of Natural History under the guidance of Dr. Gordon D. Alcorn. Dr. Alcorn opened my eyes to the wonderful world of biodiversity and natural history museums, and the later director of the museum, Dr. Dennis R. Paulson, further nurtured and encouraged my museum interests. After graduating from UPS in 1991, I took on temporary work at the University of Washington's Burke Museum working on birds salvaged from the high seas drift net fisheries. In 1992, I took a year off from museum work and headed up to Alaska to work as a National Marine Fisheies Service observer on the fishing boats in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. My first taste of "foreign" travel, and my introduction to photography.

With my feet back on the terra firma, I returned to the Burke Museum to work in the ornithology collections through the support of various grant monies. In 1993, I was invited to participate in a Burke museum trip to the far eastern side of Russia. My first trip out of the country and I go to Russia. How exciting! It was an awesome trip and changed my view of the world forever. (Everyone should travel to different countries and meet the fasciniating people that live beyond our borders!!)I returned to Russia the following year and traveled all over the western side of the country.

He encouraged me to apply because my grant monies were not gauranteed beyond the next 12 months. In May, I got the offer and immediately set off to Washington DC (my first time ever east of the Mississippi River!!) to begin my career as a Museum Specialist at the Smithsonian. Since I have been at the Smithsonian, I have extended my travels to include: Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Russia (again), Mongolia, Gabon, Mexico, Panama, Jamaica, Namibia, South Africa, Portugal, Morocco, Botswana, Swaziland, and Greece. Who knows where my job or life will take me next???

Tree Frog

My first attempts at photography started when I went to Alaska in 1992. I bought a Canon EOS Rebel kit with a 35-80 mm lense and an additional 100-300m lens. This combination served me well for several years. Now, I have a Canon 1D Mark III with several new lenses. I'm having a lot of fun with the digital format. My main focus has primarily been nature and travel photography. Fortunately, these two go hand in hand. Traveling for work and for play has given me the opportunity to take photos of some amazing stuff over the years.

Lately, I have been taking a lot of photos of dogs. Primarily because I have a Welsh Springer Spaniel, and it gives me something fun to do while watching him hunt or play.

I invite you to view my photos and drop in from time to time to look for new photos!!!
